A space for culture
and community

Over the past few years in Haifa, we have watched individualism take hold while the places where we meet have gradually shrunk. Independent cultural and artistic activity has receded, until it became hard to find room to express ourselves and connect. The effect of this void goes beyond the cultural and artistic scene: it has deepened young people's sense of isolation and weakened the social ties within our community.

This reality demands that we ask some fundamental questions:
What does the Haifa we dream of look like?
And what do we do to make it so?
For us, as people who care about restoring the momentum of Haifa's artistic, cultural and community scene, answering these questions leads us today to launch a community initiative: a cultural space run by volunteers, a home for every creative idea and initiative, and a bridge that connects us to one another.

What will we do at Namleh?
Our project is not just four walls. It is a working hive built on participation and volunteering, which keeps us independent and sustainable and pushes each of us to initiate, experiment and produce. Our work at Namleh rests on two pillars:

Our vision for the future:
We want Haifa to remain a centre of creativity, culture and the arts, and a place where every person feels they belong and can make a difference. We believe art and culture can repair our social bonds and open new horizons for inspiration and collective work. The initiative aims to be a space that releases the community's latent energy, builds an inspiring model proving that independent, sustainable collective action is both possible and necessary, and empowers initiators and creators to make a real impact on the cultural and community scene.
Why “Namleh”?
The name, Arabic for “ant”, draws its meaning from tireless work and collective organisation.
An ant does not work alone. It builds its colony grain by grain and prepares for the seasons ahead; it does not just live in the moment, it builds for the future. Ants communicate in subtle, effective ways that pass knowledge between generations, and they endure, carrying many times their own weight without giving up. In our context as Palestinians in Haifa, this carries a special meaning: the ability to keep going and keep building, whatever the circumstances.
In the ant colony, everyone has a role: those who build, those who create, those who protect and those who nourish. In the same way, Namleh believes every voice has its place.
